She usually gives me total creative freedom on all of her cakes... I love it!! The mermaid is completely edible, I molded her out of gum paste. At first I tried really hard to free hand her face, but unfortunately she just ended up looking like a potato head. So, I finally took a thin piece of rolled gumpaste and placed it on an actual barbie face...perfection!! The rest was really easy, I just molded her tail with a wire and the texture is from a large round tip. Her tail is also painted with a green, emerald luster dust. The clamshell on top is also made from gumpaste, as are the pearls. The blue 'coral' is made from royal icing. Everything was given a good coating of luster dust. The shells are made from white chocolate and then hand painted. I really had a fun time making this cake! On the menu also this past weekend was an order for 120 cupcakes! Yikes, that was way more work than I originally scheduled for!

4/14 baking the night away

I can't believe how long it's been since my last post... so much baking has come and gone. This week I had a beautiful baby shower cake. This was for my daughter's teacher, and was so much fun. All of the little baby clothes are made of fondant, the carriage on top is made of gum paste. I also had a topsy turvey cake which was fun, but always a bit nerve wracking. I'm always afraid of cutting too much of a slant and the cake actually falling instead of just looking like it's about to fall. It held up well, and was so cute. In the midst of all of this my son informed that he needed about 3 dozen cupcakes for his book club on Friday....lots of baking!!

2.19.12...Boucakes!

So, this weekend I had a bit of free time. Well, free time for me begins after 9pm when most of the kids are asleep. I decided to give cupcake bouquets a go, and it was so much fun!! There were definitely a few important lessons learned. #1: Don't handle the clay pot with greasy, buttercreamy icing hands. #2: It's kind of important to mark where each cupcake is going before frosting them all and shoving them in haphazardly. :) #3: Probably a good idea to make sure you have cupcake liners in one uniform color. I wasn't planning on doing cupcakes this weekend, so I didn't make sure I had all of the supplies. I had to dig through my pantry which is why in the pink bouquet (with the greasy pot) you'll see stripes on the cupcakes...oops..these were leftover from valentines. I'm also in search of super strong cupcake liners. It's quite frustrating when the liners buckle when pouring the batter into cupcake pan, and pull away from the cupcake once they're done and out of the pan. Although, after some troubleshooting I think I've found the solution to the liners pulling away problem. I've been taking my cupcakes out of the cupcake tin as soon as I get them out of the oven. Yes, it's quite hot, but I think this keeps the steam from warping the liners which maybe causes them to pull away. I've also been baking them for a bit longer. I think when they're underdone, even a little bit, they're too moist and this causes the liner to pull away as well.

1.25.12

I suppose rest time is over. Valentine's day is slowly creeping up and I've created a couple of cute new cookie designs. I am loving the zebra print heart...so cute. This past weekend was also my son's 13th birthday and he requested a grenade cake. Not my favorite design. The icing color resembled an avocado, but he was incredibly happy and that is all that matters.

1.16.12

Well...it seems to be that I am somehow taking cake orders again. I don't quite know how this happened, because I haven't even sent out an official email yet.
